In short

Pouring, wiping, sorting socks. Simple jobs build concentration and independence. Here are seven to try at home this week.

In a Montessori classroom, “practical life” activities are some of the most popular. Children pour, scoop, wipe and fold, and they love it. These real tasks build concentration, coordination and confidence. You can do the same at home with things you already have.

  1. Pouring water from a small jug into a cup, with a cloth nearby for spills.
  2. Wiping the table after a meal with a small damp sponge.
  3. Sorting clean socks into pairs.
  4. Watering plants with a small watering can.
  5. Washing fruit and vegetables in a bowl of water.
  6. Putting toys back in their own basket or shelf.
  7. Setting their own place at the table: plate, cup and spoon.

Show the job slowly once, with few words, then let your child try. Expect spills, and keep a cloth within reach so they can clean up themselves. The goal is not a perfect result but a child who says, “I can do it.”
